Upper Merri Creek Tour: BEAM-WEG

Tour various parts of the Upper Merri. We will visit sites by car and explore each area on foot. The sites are key areas which are proposed for protection and restoration as part of the wallan wallan Regional Parkland.

Ecological Monitoring Launch
Hidden Valley Rail Trail Reserve

The Wallan Environment Group (WEG) is helping to restore biodiversity values in the Hidden Valley Rail Trail Reserve.
We are now starting an ecological monitoring program to gauge the effectiveness of our work, and you’re invited to be part of the monitoring team!
We will be measuring variables that over time will tell us how the reserve is recovering. The program is led by an ecologist. Training is provided. Plant identification skill is useful but not necessary. Join us in learning an important tool in conservation!

Weed Management for Mitchell Shire Landowners (and others)
Do you know that you have obligations to control certain weeds on your property? Join us and learn about how weeds impact the shire’s biodiversity, and what you can do about them. All welcome — whether you are a landowner or if you are interested in knowing more about the Shire’s environment.
What you’ll learn:
• Planning & Compliance: Understand your obligations as a landowner, and create a simple weed management plan.
• Identification: How to identify noxious weeds and where to seek help.
• Control Strategies: What you can do, and when you should seek help.
• Local Support: Connect with Council, local environment groups and other landowners.

Working Bee & Hand-weeding Workshop

Targeting woody weed seedlings
Meet at the end of Lucca Way Hidden Valley
Weeding gear including gloves will be provided but please bring secateurs if you own a pair. Wear appropriate clothing and sun protection. Refreshments provided. This event is unsuitable for children under 16 years old.
Two different methods will be used:
- Chemical – cut & paint, using secateurs & dabber bottles
- Mechanical – physical removal using the appropriate tools

Growing plants with TreeProject

TreeProject volunteers grow native plants for the revegetation projects of local Landcare groups and landholders.
This workshop is run by Upper Deep Creek Landcare Network.
Since the TreeProject’s inception in 1989 (https://treeproject.org.au/) volunteer TreeProject growers have propagated more than two million native plants for revegetation projects by Landcare groups and landholders across Victoria. The TreeProject plants that the Upper Maribyrnong Catchment (Landcare) Group and many other Landcare groups source are grown by TreeProject growers primarily in the suburbs of Melbourne. Over the past three decades the collection of plants by UMCG members from TreeProject growers (for distribution to UMCG members) from Melbourne has involved many hundreds of trips by car to Melbourne to pick up plants from TreeProject growers who have propagated plants in their backyards. We aim to encourage more Wallan locals to become TreeProject growers.
Workshop’s purpose: to introduce to Wallan residents the TreeProject, and encourage them to become volunteer TreeProject growers to grow native plants for local Landcare groups’ (including UMCG) revegetation projects.
Bushland Walk & Talk
Hidden Valley Bushland
Saturday 19 September 2026 10.00am-noon
Learn about our local fauna and flora. Remnant bushland is home to sugar gliders, brush-tailed phascogales, dunnarts, echidnas and more. Woodland birds feed and nest amongst the trees. Many wildflowers grow there, including special orchids.
Meet opposite 109 Dolomite Rise Hidden Valley.
The number of participants is limited, so please register.

Join the Wallan Environmental Group, including the Hidden Valley Environment Subcommittee, as we investigate the bushland at night along the Rail Reserve in Hidden Valley. This is a free community event.

Clean Up Australia Day
Sunday 1 March 2026 from 10am-12noon
Please join us on Clean Up Australia Day to clean up the roadside of Old Sydney Road, Wallan, between its intersections with Darraweit Road and Stockdale Road. We’d love you to join us to clean up this section of Old Sydney Road, which has high conservation values with areas of significant local flora including many wildflowers in spring https://www.beam.org.au/naturaltreasures/old-sydney-road-wildflower-area. However, it’s also an area where lots of rubbish gets dumped along the roadside.
Meet: “Walladarra” 1395 Old Sydney Road, Wallan (Map link https://maps.app.goo.gl/X96cUznyuHLB62Kx5) – meet at the house to complete the event attendance sheet and for a briefing at 10am.
When: Sunday 1 March 2026 from 10am -12noon. A light lunch will be provided after the cleanup is completed at 12 noon.
Parking: please don’t park along Old Sydney Road. Instead drive into the property at 1395 Old Sydney Road where areas to park are available.
Note: as this cleanup is along a roadside children (15 years and under) are not permitted to attend.
What to bring: please wear sturdy shoes/boots, gloves, sun protection, and bring a water bottle.
What’s provided: bags to collect rubbish, sharps containers, gloves (if you don’t have them, sunscreen, and water.
Support from Mitchell Shire Council: this cleanup would not be possible without the support of Mitchell Shire Council, including the traffic management signage along Old Sydney Road that will reduce the speed limit to 4Okph during the time of this event.
